How to Make Money with Flash Games

If you have made a flash game or run a website that promotes flash games, this article will show you how to start making passive income from them.

Step1
Add Advertisements to your game

For Game Developers:
The first thing you should do after completing your game is add advertising to the game file itself. It is important to do this BEFORE ever releasing it online to any website including your own. The reason for this is that people can copy your game and place it on their site, and if you haven't added ads before they copy it, the ads will not show in the version on their site, and you won't receive credit.

To add advertisements to your game I suggest using a company called MochiAds. It is free to sign up. MochiAds also allows you to add leaderboards (AKA highscore boards) to your game for free and it is easy to do. Just add one line of code to your game. Everything is explained in detail on their site www.mochiads.com.

(NOTE: You typically earn $0.10-$0.25 for every thousand plays. This is a very solid amount considering good games could get over 20,000 hits a day earning $150/month.)

For Website Owners:
You too can earn money using MochiAds. Just sign up as a Publisher, and add games from their collection to your site. You will earn 10% of the profits every time an ad is shown in one of the games you are hosting.
Step2
Find a sponsor and license your game.

One of the quickest yet hardest ways to make money from the flash games you create is to find a website who is willing to sponsor them. With a single sponsorship, an individual can make anywhere from $1000-$7000 for a game. So what is the catch? Because there is so much flash content being created daily, your game has to really stand out in order for sponsors to be interested. The graphics and sounds must be high-quality, and the programming must be fluid and flawless. Not to mention the fact that the game itself needs to be easy to learn and addictive to play. If you think you have what it takes to get a game sponsored, here are some sites you should check out.

AddictingGames.com

First, we have Addictinggames.com. This is probably the most popular flash game website on the web. It will be the most competitive for trying to earn sponsorship, but it will also yield the greatest profits. In addition to an initial sum, it appears you can earn money if your game is in the top 25 for the most hits in any given month. See the site above for more information and to submit a game.

ArmorGames.com

ArmorGames.com also sponsors games for a profit of $1500-$7000 per game. Some games can earn more if they are of superior quality. See the link above for all the information.

FlashGameLicense.com

Next, there is a little site called FlashGameLicense.com. This is a site dedicated to connecting potential sponsors with developers who are looking to get their games licensed. Simply sign up using the link above and browse the site to see what it is all about. Then submit your own game to see who might be interested. The average profit for this site appears to be around $1200.
Step3
Create your own website and place ads in it.

One way to make money, whether you make flash games or not, is to start your own flash game web site. To do this, I suggest using GoDaddy.com to purchase a domain, and use a web editor like Kompozer to create your web pages. Sign up with MochiAds (see link above), and use their games to build up a nice inventory (this way you can earn money from other people's games). There are several challenges involved with making your own site which include the following:

1. It requires some technical knowledge about html coding.
2. It costs a small amount of money.
3. There are already a great number of flash game sites out there. Making yours stand out will be very difficult.
4. It takes time to keep a website up-to-date.

If you think you are up for the challenge go for it, and once you have your site created, add advertisements to it to start earning money from your visitors. Most people have heard of google's AdSense. This is one way to place ads on your site, but I have had better luck with other companies such as WidgetBucks . Look around and see what sites might work best for you.
Step4
Send traffic to your site.

This is probably one of the least effective ways to gain recognition, but signing up for a traffic exchange program will help you get your site name out and about so people will become familiar with it. I suggest using TrafficSwarm . This is how it works. You open your start page and click on a link. You have to look at that page for 20 seconds in order to get credit, then you go back and click on another link, again and again. The credits you earn are then used to send traffic to your site. Other people will click your link the way you clicked theirs. The reason this doesn't work so great is that the people coming to your site are just trying to earn credits, they may not be interested in playing any games. But you never know, it is worth a shot at least at the beginning.
Step5
Get the word out.

Whether you chose to make a game or to start a site, you need to let people know about it. Traffic exchanges are one way, but one of the best ways is through forums. Look for a forum for the type of game you have made and make a post. Using the distribution provided by MochiAds is a GREAT way to earn recognition for your games. Promoting a website is a bit harder. Try posting flyers at nearby colleges, adding your website to your forum signatures, or whatever else you can think of. Whatever you can do to get the word out that you have a new game or site is the best thing possible.

Night Interior Rendering Tutorial (using vray and 3d max)

This is a follow-up of the Night Exterior Rendering Tutorial that I have written a while ago, so if you haven’t checked that one already, I advice you to read it before this one.

Background image
1) For the first step of this tutorial you need to choose a photo for the background. Try to find a picture that is rich in colors, with shades of blue for the sky instead of black.
2) Create a plane and place it at the exterior, perpendicular to the camera, like in the picture bellow.

3) Apply a vray light material, and map the photo to it.

You may ask why you need to map the image on a plane and not simply drop it in the environment slot.; the answer is simple… if you do that, all the reflective materials in the scene will look transparent, unless you use a spherical environment, and not a planar one.

General Vray Settings
Before starting to place lights in the scene, I usually make general rendering settings.
1) Check “on” in the vray global illumination rollout
2) Chose irradiance map with low preset for the primary bounce (you will keep this only for test rendering; this should be changed to “high” before hitting the high resolution rendering) and lightcache for the secondary bounce.
3) Chose “Reinhard” in the v-ray color mapping rollout, with the multiplier to 1.5 and burn value to 0.8

Natural light
The key to obtaining a realistic architectural rendering of an interior at night is the color variation in the light. Many would be tempted to say that an interior scene at night time doesn’t receive any natural illumination; that couldn’t be more false. Natural light that comes through the window, although it has a lot less intensity than at day time, it is considerably more saturated (in shades of blue).

In order to mimic that effect, the first thing to do is to check the “GI environment (skylight) override”, leave the multiplier to “1” and chose a dark blue for color.
If you do a test rendering at this point, you should obtain a result similar to the one bellow.

As you can see, that is by far not enough. If we increase the GI multiplier we will end up with areas that receive too much illumination for a night rendering. What we need to do in this case is to place a light that will affect ONLY the ambient, without affecting the diffuse or the specular.
We can achieve this by placing an omni light just outside the windows, with inverse square as decay type, and “ambient only” ticked in the “Advanced Effects” rollout.
Use the scale (and non-uniform scale) tool until the gizmo spreads to about ½ of the room, like in the screen capture bellow

For the intensity multiplier, you can choose a value around 0.35, depending on the scene. Regarding the color of the light, choose a hue that is predominant in the color of the sky of your background image, so that it will blend well with the rendering.
After doing these steps, I ended up with the following image:

Artificial Lights
At this point we have enough natural light in the scene, so it’s time to go to the next step. In this interior I will use 3 types of artificial lights: spotlights – that will give a sharp shadow, indirect light (where the wall meets the ceiling) and a smooth light coming from the large pendant in the ceiling.

1) For the spotlights I almost always use photometric lights, so this will be no exception. I started with a “recessed 75 W wall wash” template that comes with 3ds max kit, but you can use any IES file you like and tweak the parameters until you like what you see. In this particular case I have changed the color temperature to 4950 K in the “Intensity/Color Attenuation” rollout and obtained the following result:

2) In the next step, we will add light to the pendant in the ceiling. Since in real life this type of lighting fixture casts a subtle area shadow, the most suitable for the job is a planar vray light. For this interior, a multiplier of 4 and a pale orange hue for color where all what I needed.
I got a bit lazy and did not model this lighting fixture entirely, and I just assigned a vray light material to the part that is emitting light; if I wanted to do everything from a to z I should have modeled the inside of a lamp and use a translucent plastic material for that part in order to obtain a more realistic result (like in the vray lampshade tutorial I have written sometime ago)

3) For the indirect lighting above the wall just model a thin box, assign a vray light material to it and place it above the geometry at the top of the wall. While you are doing this, you may want to “turn on” the monitors by assigning a vray light materials to the screens with a “desktop” map, like in the image bellow:

4) We are almost done and ready for the final touches! If you analyze the rendering carefully, you will notice that it still looks a bit cold, and lacks the “yellow/orange” that is specific to artificial lighting. We can correct that by creating another omni light, similar to the one placed just outside the windows that you have created at the beginning of the tutorial, only this time you need to use an orange tint instead of the blue one.

Here is the final result:

If you have any kind of comments or questions feel free to use the form bellow, and I will be more than happy to respond.

Making 3D Orbiting Ball

()

The example above is the Flash Orbiting ball. This tutorial will lead you through the process to create an object that flies around text, a logo or object, anything you choose. There are 4 layers needed to create this effect.

 1. The ball
 2. The motion guide for the ball
 3. The text in front of the ball
 4. The text for the back of the ball

First start a new movie and create or import an object. For this tutorial I chose a ball. Name that layer Ball, this can be done by double clicking the layers title and typing a new name. Make sure the ball or object is selected by clicking on it, then choose insert> convert to symbol.

Now, left click on a key frame somewhere down the timeline (I chose frame 20) and right click in that keyframe and select insert keyframe from the pop up menu. NOTE: the more frames inbetween the first keyframe and the last keyframe indicate the speed of the object Orbiting. For example more frames slower speed - less frames faster speed.

Next, left click the first keyframe and drag your mouse to the last keyframe while holding down the left mouse button. Then right click on on any of those selected frames and choose properties

Follow the picture above for the proper settings for the frame properties.

Note: Save your work frequently, Ideally at the end of each of these four sections.

Second, create a motion guide for that object. You can do this by right clicking on the layer named ball and choose add motion guide from the pop up menu. Select the first keyframe of the motion guide layer, then choose the circle shape from the tools menu and make the fill color empty and the outline anycolor you like. Use the tool to draw a circle and keep in mind that this is the path your object or ball will follow.

In the above picture I drew a circle and sqewed it using this button to make it appear as you see it. Then I chose the pencil button and drew two lines very close to each other so as to break the solid line of the circle I drew, follow the example below.

Select the part of the circle that lies between the two pencil lines you drew and right click it. Then choose cut from the pop up menu, It should look like this picture below.

Now cut the rest of the pencil lines you drew in until only the broken circle remains.

Note: If you are having a hard time seeing it, click the magnifier and left click over the area to magnify.

Now select the first keyframe of the ball layer and move the ball or object over one end of the broken circle. Next, Choose the last keyframe of the ball layer and move the ball or object over the other end of the broken circle.

Test your movie by holding down the Ctrl key and pressing the Enter key. At this point you may need to move the ball in the first and last keyframe of the ball layer to position it correctly over the ends of the broken circle motion guide. When it works the ball or object will follow the broken circle from start to finish. Double click the left mouse button in the last keyframe of the motion guide layer and choose the actions tab from the pop up menu click the + button in the top left hand corner and choose goto from the drop down menu. Make sure your actions look like the below frame properties window.

Third Select the Add a layer button and call it name, select the first keyframe of that layer and insert your text. Use the text tool button to insert your text or even draw another object import a logo. Advanced users may want to insert a movie clip symbol. For this example I use my name.

NOTE: Give the name a shadow effect by first using the text tool to write my name and then choosing edit from the main menu.

Then Duplicate from the drop down menu. So now I have 2 instances of the same text, then all I do is change the color of the text in the back and align it behind the first.

Now insert a keyframe by right clicking in the last keyframe on the name layer and choosing insert keyframe from the pop up menu. The last keyframe here is number 20.

Last lets look at the frames and layers again before we publish our 3D animation.

You should now have 3 layers:

 1. The name
 2. The ball
 3. The motion guide

Next, right click on the first keyframe of the name layer and choose copy frames from the pop up menu.

Then add a new layer and right click in that new layers first keyframe and choose paste frames from the pop up menu.

Drag that layer to the top by left clicking and holding down the mouse button while dragging that layer using the mouse cursor, to the top.

Quick Overview: What essentially is happening here is the ball is going around and around. The text is some times in front of the ball and some times in back of the ball, thats why we have a name layer on top and on bottom. The trick is to have the top name layer visable over the ball only when the ball is on the right side of the circle guide. So, the ball appears to be behind the name.

Notice where the ball is in the position shown above, This is when we want the top layer called name to be visable so it will cover the ball.

Now, left click and hold down the mouse button in the top layers first keyframe and drag it to the third frame. This will move the first keyframe to frame number 3. Then place your mouse cursor over frame 20 in the top layer called name and left click, holding down the mouse button and drag the cursor over to frame number 13 that's seven frames highlighted. Finally right click in any of those selected frames and choose delete frames from the pop up menu and it should look like above.

Then choose File>Save as and then File> Publish.

Now that wasn't so bad, was it? Think about it a little bit durring the next couple of days and let your subconcious work on it. You'll develop better ideas for cool pseudo 3D effects. Make sure you submit them to Flashkit so others can see what you've done and learn from your experience.

Falling Snow Effect

In this article we are going to design Falling Snow Effect in macromedia now Adobe Flash. You follow simple steps below…

Create a new document

Create a new document. Set background color to #FFEAF4. Set the width and height of your movie to be 400(width) by 300(height). You can define your document size depending on background image you are using. Here I am using snow-house image (see figure - snow-house.jpg) whose size is 400px by 300px. So I have kept my document size as per size of image I am using.

Image

Figure - snow-house.jpg

Set your frame rate to 35 frames per second. Frame rate defines speed of falling snow. More the frame rate faster the speed and vice versa.

Now import your background image to library. You can do it as follows…

File > Import > Import to Library…

Image

Drag it from library and set it as background of your document. Keep image X-Y position to ‘0’ so image get properly align.

Create Snow

Now we are going to generate Snow. Press Ctrl+F8 or Insert > New Symbol… to add new symbol. Name it ‘snow’. Modify its property as per following figure…

Image

Now select movie clip ‘snow’ form library by double clicking it. Now select Oval tool and set Stroke Color is set to No Color, and that the Fill Color is set to White.

Image

Draw a small circle. Press shift button for perfect Circle. Set its property as shown below…

You can modify width and Height as you wish. And align to ‘0’ will better.

Image

Select ‘Scene 1’. And drag movie clip ‘snow’ form library. And modify its property. Give it an instance name as ‘snow’. Refer fig 5.

Image

Now go to action panel by pressing F9 or through Windows > Actions paste following piece of code (code 1) there.

Code 1
onClipEvent (load) {
if (this._name == “snow”) {
_parent.i = 0;
}

this._alpha = _parent.randRange(80, 100); //Alpha Transparency of snow
this._width = _parent.randRange(5, 10); //Snow width
this._height = this._width; //Keep round shaped snow
this._x = _parent.randRange(-100, _parent.mw+100);
this._y = _parent.randRange(0, -50);
speed = _parent.randRange(2, 5); //Folling speed.

}

onClipEvent (enterFrame) {

this._y += speed;
this._x += _parent.interval-3;

if (this._y>_parent.mh+20) {
this.removeMovieClip();
}
}
Now create a new movie clip ‘snow_bit’ same as you do for ‘snow’. Drag ‘snow_bit’ on ‘Scene 1’. Give it an instance name as ‘snow_bit’.

Select first frame of ‘Scene 1’ and add following source code to action panel.

Code 2
speed1 = .9;
mw = 400; //Movie Width
mh = 300; //Movie Height

snowdrop = 50; //the larger the interval is, lesser it’s going to snow

function randRange(min, max) {
var randomNum = Math.round(Math.random()*(max-min))+min;
return randomNum;
}
setInterval(CursorMovement, 40);

function CursorMovement() {
snow_bit._x = speed1*(snow_bit._x-_xmouse)+_xmouse;
interval = (snow_bit._x/mw*6);
}

function snowfall() {
i++;
duplicateMovieClip(snow, [”snow”+i], i);
}
setInterval(snowfall, snowdrop);
Now publish .swf file. You can do it through

File > Publish Preview > Flash / HTML or press F12

XML Integration With Flash

New we are going to integrate XML file with Flash. We will read XML data using a flash and display it. To read XML file we are going to deal with inbuilt function provided by macromedia flash. The event we’re dealing with here is the event of the XML being fully downloaded and introduced into Flash movie. This is the called the onLoad event.
Syntax:
onLoad = function(success:Boolean) {}
If the XML document is received successfully, the success parameter is true. If the document was not received, or if an error occurred in receiving the response from the server, the success parameter is false. The default, implementation of this method is not active. To override the default implementation, you must assign a function that contains custom actions.

So when loading XML into Flash, we have to create that XML instance. The XML instance here and most we will see from now on despite the fact that naming is arbitrary, will be called “my_xml.
my_xml = new XML();
An XML document is represented in Flash by the XML class. We can use the methods and properties of the XML class to load, parse, send, build, and manipulate XML document trees. You must use the constructor new XML() to create an XML object before calling any method of the XML class.

Now we are going to load a XML file. my_xml.load(”test.xml”); will do the same for us. it will Loads an XML document from the specified URL, and replaces the contents of the specified XML object with the downloaded XML data. The URL is relative and is called using HTTP. The load process is asynchronous; it does not finish immediately after the load() method is executed.

When the load() method is executed, the XML object property loaded is set to false. When the XML data finishes downloading, the loaded property is set to true, and the onLoad event handler is invoked. The XML data is not parsed until it is completely downloaded. If the XML object previously contained any XML trees, they are discarded.

Now we have to define a custom function that executes when the onLoad event handler of the XML object is invoked. Before that we will first decide what the XML file content and also make a skeleton to display our xml file. We are going to display contents of test.xml which contain Countries and their Capitals. Structure of test.xml as below…

Design Flash Skeleton

Now we are going to make a flash skeleton for it…
Create a new Flash document File > Flash Document or by Ctrl+N and modify its property as width ‘250px’ & Height ‘150px’ and background color as black. You can do this through Modify > Document… or by Ctrl+J.

XML Integration with flash skeleton

XML Integration

Now we have to define a function for parse our XML file.
function parse_xml() {
// take the data from the XML lines (line 0,1,2) and place that data inside text fields
text_field_1.text = my_xml.firstChild.childNodes[0].attributes.country_name;
text_field_2.text = my_xml.firstChild.childNodes[1].attributes.country_name;
text_field_3.text = my_xml.firstChild.childNodes[2].attributes.country_name;
//
text_field_a.text = my_xml.firstChild.childNodes[0].attributes.Capital;
text_field_b.text = my_xml.firstChild.childNodes[1].attributes.Capital;
text_field_c.text = my_xml.firstChild.childNodes[2].attributes.Capital;
}
so we get result as… if file now working please click here to see working example

Disini saya akan memberikan tips gimana membuat design flash dengan mudah sesuai dengan yang sering saya lakukan. Nggak usah basa-basi ya..kita mulai aja.

Colors and Gradients on Flash

We have briefly gone over how colors work, but this section will delve into more detail and introduce you to gradients, how they work, and how to create them.
The easiest way to adjust color is to use the Color Swatches panel and the Color Mixer panel.

The Color Swatches Panel
Windows, Color Swatches (Ctrl+F9)
The Color Swatches panel has the default web 256 colors in it as well as a few gradients at the bottom from which you can select. You can sort these colors to group by color or leave them in the standard layout. You can add colors from color files (.clr), which can be found at C:\Program Files\Macromedia\Flash8\en\First Run\Color Sets. You can also add colors from graphics by going through the following steps:

1.
Open the Color Swatches panel.
2.
Select Add Colors from the submenu in the panel.
3.
Choose any GIF file (or use image_1.gif, which can be found on the website).

That's it. You now have all the colors from that GIF file. If you do not see any change in the colors in the panel, the GIF you chose did not have any new colors. Try a higher-quality GIF file (nature pictures are great for this).
After you have the new colors in your swatches, you can save them back out as a .clr file or even set them as your default from the same submenu.

The Color Mixer Panel
Windows, Color Mixer (Shift+F9)
The Color Mixer panel can create and edit colors and gradients. The Color Mixer panel is a bit different than the Color Swatches panel; however, they work together to create and store colors and gradients.

This walkthrough will go over how to edit and save a gradient using the Color Mixer panel.
1.
Draw an oval on the stage with a solid color.
2.
With the Color Mixer panel open, select Radial from the fill type drop-down.
3.
You can select either of the handles, slide them along the color bar, or change their color completely using the color drop-down. You can also add colors to the color bar by clicking when you see a white plus sign.
4.
When you're satisfied with your new gradient, select the submenu drop-down from the Color Mixer panel and choose Add Swatch.
TIP
Gradients can handle up to 15 different colors.
